The best time of year to paint a house exterior in Houston

Heat, humidity and afternoon storms all affect how exterior paint cures. Here is how we plan around Houston weather so the finish holds up.

Painter spraying a white deck railing on a clear sunny day

In a lot of the country, exterior painting season is a few short months. In Houston we can paint outside for most of the year, but the weather still decides how well that paint bonds and how long it lasts. The goal is to put paint on a dry surface and give it a few dry hours to set.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots

March through May and October through November usually bring milder temperatures and lower humidity. Paint dries at a steady pace, crews can work longer days, and there is less risk of a surprise afternoon storm washing a fresh coat. These months book up fast, so it helps to call early.

Summer painting is possible with the right plan

Houston summers are hot and humid, and direct sun can heat siding well past the air temperature. Paint applied to a surface that is too hot can dry too fast and lose adhesion.

  • 01Follow the shade. We start on the side of the house that is out of the sun and move around as the day goes on.
  • 02Start early. Morning hours are cooler, but we wait for dew to burn off before painting.
  • 03Watch the radar. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. We stop early if rain is coming so fresh paint is not rinsed off.

Winter has its own rules

Houston winters are mild, but cold fronts can drop temperatures quickly. Most exterior paints list a minimum temperature for application and for the night after. We check the forecast for the full cure window, not just the day we paint.

Dew point matters more than people think

When the surface temperature gets close to the dew point, moisture forms on the siding. Painting over that moisture is one of the most common causes of peeling. On humid mornings we measure before we open a can.

FROM OUR CREW

If your home has sat through a rainy week, give the siding a couple of dry days before painting. Wood and stucco hold water longer than they look.

Plan ahead for HOA approval

Many Katy, Sugar Land and Spring neighborhoods require color approval before exterior work. That process can take a few weeks. We can help you gather swatches and product information so approval is done by the time your spot on the schedule comes up.
